Music lessons for teenagers — from confidence to ABRSM prep

Teenagers often want something more than "learning an instrument". They want to learn to sing the songs they love, work on musical theatre audition prep, prepare for GCSE and A-level Music, or take on ABRSM grade exams. We tailor teen music lessons around those real goals. Sessions build technique steadily while keeping the repertoire connected to what the student actually enjoys.

Frequently asked

Questions from parents

What age can my child start?

From age five, for both singing and piano. Younger children start with shorter lessons — 30 or 45 minutes — so the session stays playful and focused, and we move to the full 60-minute format only when they’re ready for it.

How long should my child’s lesson be?

It depends on age and attention span rather than a rule. Children under ten usually do best with 45 minutes, and some younger beginners start at 30. Teenagers generally work well with the full hour. We’ll suggest a length after the trial lesson, when we’ve seen how your child concentrates.

Can I sit in on my child’s lesson?

Yes — you’re very welcome to stay, particularly for the first few lessons while your child settles in. Some children concentrate better with a parent in the room and some without, and you’ll usually both know which after a couple of sessions. Either way you’ll get regular progress updates.

What if my child won’t practise at home?

It’s the most common worry parents raise, and it’s rarely a sign that the child dislikes music. Usually the task feels too big or too vague. We set small, specific things to do between lessons rather than an amount of time to fill, and we’ll adjust what we ask for to fit what’s realistic in your week.

Should my child start with singing or piano?

There’s no wrong answer, and it’s worth asking your child. Piano makes musical structure visible, which helps reading and theory later. Singing needs no equipment and is often less intimidating for a shy child. If they’re genuinely undecided, the trial lesson is a good way to find out — and they can switch, or do both.

What happens if my child loses interest?

Tell us, and we’ll change what we’re doing before it becomes a reason to quit. Most dips come from repertoire that’s stopped feeling relevant, and moving to a song they’ve chosen themselves usually fixes it. Lessons here aren’t built on a rigid curriculum, so there’s room to follow what keeps them playing.
